A Shurugwi man allegedly struck his wife with an iron bar leaving her for dead before destroying her furniture after she told him she wanted to divorce him, a court heard yesterday. Oneti Musana, 22, of Village 6, Chironde, Chief Nhema, Shurugwi, appeared before Regional Magistrate Morgan Nemadire facing one count of attempted murder and one count of malicious damage to property.

Musana assaulted her in 2013.

The magistrate did not ask him to plead after his lawyer failed to show up.

He remanded Musana out of custody on free bail to August 3, while the court waits for his legal representative.

Musana had pleaded to be given bail, saying he had too many responsibilities.

“Your worship before I was arrested I was taking care of my elderly mother as she can’t cater for herself since she is old,” he said. “I was taking care of a blind relative and also my wife had a baby so I’ve to look after them,” pleaded Musana.

Prosecuting, Andrew Marimo told the court that on July 12, 2013, at around 11PM, Musana who was having problems with his wife, Portia Zvidzai, went to her bedroom hut at Gretina Mine, Range Farm 2 in Lower Gweru.

Musana, the court heard, wanted to solve their outstanding marriage problems amicably.

“Musana and Zvidzai were customarily married and have since been divorced. On the day in question, Musana went to Zvidzai’s bedroom hut and she refused to talk to him and that angered him,” said Marimo.

He said Musana picked an iron bar, struck Zvidzai twice on the head and all over the body before she collapsed.
