A 36-YEAR-OLD man from Nkayi has been dragged before the courts for allegedly preying on a 14-year-old girl!
Daniel Ncube Moyo faced a Bulawayo Magistrate, Mrs Dambudzo Malunga, this week, slapped with a rape charge. He’s been locked up on remand until 30 May to cool his heels.
The prosecution, led by Owen Mugari, painted a shocking picture of events that allegedly unfolded on December 4th in the dusty Zinyangeni village. According to the State, the young complainant was fetching water at a borehole near Moyo’s homestead when the accused allegedly pounced.
“The accused complimented her, saying she had grown up, and even offered her biscuits, which she refused,” Mugari told the court. “He then dragged her into a nearby bush, forced her down, removed her panties, and proceeded to sexually assault her.” The details shared in court were graphic.
But Moyo sang a different tune from the dock! He claimed he was nowhere near the village at the time of the alleged crime, saying he was busy toiling away at Mbijana mine. He even offered up a Mr Msizi Moyo as a potential witness to back up his alibi.
Adding another twist to the tale, Moyo told the court that upon his return from the mines, his younger sister informed him that police had paid him a visit. However, he allegedly didn’t bother to report to the station. The next day, he claimed a whole eight police officers descended upon his home, allegedly assaulting him with batons before his arrest.
Mugari countered this narrative, saying the alleged sexual assault only came to light after the brave young complainant confided in her maternal aunt, which ultimately led to Moyo’s apprehension.
The case has been adjourned, leaving the community in shock and Moyo behind bars. Will his alibi hold water, or will he face the music for the alleged heinous crime? Bmetro will keep you updated on this developing story!
