Manicaland excels at Danhiko Paralympics

This year surpassed other years with a record number of 14 schools including private clubs representing the province at the Games which ran from October 2 to 4, drawing over 112 institutions from countrywide.

Manicaland excelled at the 27th edition of the annual Danhiko Paralympics Games held in Harare recently by scooping seven medals.

This year surpassed other years with a record number of 14 schools including private clubs representing the province at the Games which ran from October 2 to 4, drawing over 112 institutions from countrywide.

The province managed to garner five gold medals, silver and bronze, bringing the total number of medals to seven, a performance which was rated as the best compared to past years.

In athletics, Chisamba Primary School scooped two gold medals, while Mutanda Primary School and St Werburghs’ Primary School each scooped a gold medal.

In basketball, Sakubva’s Wolves Club scooped a gold medal in the boys division and bronze in the girls division.

Emmanuel Matonhodze from Sakubva’s Sanganai Club clinched a gold medal in the swimming competitions for the hearing impaired, while the club’s netball team settled for a silver medal.

In the five-aside soccer tournament for the mentally handicapped Sanganai scooped another gold medal.Chisamba Primary School Technical Vocational trainer, Trevor Mtisi said the performance by Manicaland teams was improving with each year.

“This year we saw some private clubs coming on board and we attained more medals managing to excel last year’s performance. This is a positive sign showing the increase in popularity of the Games,” said Mtisi.

The Games where officially opened by the First Lady, Dr Amai Grace Mugabe, who is their patron. Over 2 300 athletes competed in athletics (field and track events), wheelchair basketball, netball, soccer, five-aside soccer, wheelchair tennis, swimming, slalom and goal ball.
