PEOPLE in Manicaland have wished President Mugabe well in his new post as the chairman of the African Union, saying he should continue shining and advocate the true African agenda to the world.They urged the firebrand statesman to place Africa at an equal footing with other continental bodies in tackling issues that affect the global citizenry.
Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs Cde Mandi Chimene said Africa stands to benefit under President Mugabe’s leadership.
“We know our President and what he is capable of doing. I tell you that for the next 12 months when he will be at the helm of AU, the continent will definitely see better times rolling. President Mugabe is a principled leader with the aspirations of Africans at heart. He has vast experience and will definitely use that to steer the continental body to greater heights.
“What is needed is for Africa to unite. We are grateful that our President has the capacity to unite people and usher in continental development.
“He is a firm believer of the fact that resources in Africa must benefit and uplift the lives of people on the continent first. When that happens, this content will be a better world. We congratulate our President and wish him well in the new post he assumed,” she said.
A Sakubva Green Market informal trader, Mr Innocent Chironzo, said a new dispensation was beckoning for Africans on the worldwide stage.
“We are tired of being viewed as second-class citizens who always take the back seat. In President Mugabe, we have a person who will take the bull by the horns by fearlessly laying out our concerns to the world.
“He is not a stooge of imperialism as shown by his policies at home and I am sure those with colonialist tendencies are quaking in their shoes.
“Most African countries are faced with hunger and a litany of diseases and epidemics and we believe President Mugabe will handle them well.
“Issues of Ebola, HIV and Aids, terrorists and new age colonialism require urgent attention,” he said.
A primary school teacher from Chikanga, Mrs Sekai Dube, said it was a blessing for Africa for President Mugabe to lead the continent.
“Africans need to be empowered and I think President Mugabe has the right prescription. The continent is home to a wide array of natural resources but surprisingly it is the poorest,“ said Mrs Dube.
