PEOPLE from Manicaland have hailed the selection of Mutare South legislator Nyasha Chikwinya as the new Minister of Women Affairs, Gender and Community Development in a Cabinet reshuffle on Monday, describing her as “workaholic”.
Those who spoke to The Manica Post also applauded the move by President Mugabe to reassign some ministers, saying some new brooms were likely to eradicate corruption and mediocrity that had characterised some ministries.
War veteran and Mutare District Administrator Cde Cosmas Chiringa said Cde Chikwinya was a tireless horse.
“Of course, that came as a big surprise considering what happened in the past. President Mugabe has sent a strong message through that move. Her appointment has cleared the mud that had been thrown at her. The President obviously read it and has proved a point that goes beyond political mudslinging.
“Cde Chikwinya is a workhorse; she is tireless and her approach to issues is unique, which explains why she has made a positive impact in Mutare South constituency. There is nothing that can stop her from delivering in her new capacity,” said Cde Chiringa.
“We really thank President Mugabe for recognising her potential at a time her political life appeared to be on the receiving end of the dynamics and power games in Manicaland,” added the war veteran.
Zanu-PF women’s league chairlady Cde Happiness Faith Nyakuedzwa said women in Manicaland were celebrating Cde Chikwinya’s appointment.
“It brings unity and sanity in the province. The move has shown that power should not be concentrated in the hands of a few individuals as this creates problems. Responsibilities should be spread and as a new broom Cde Chikwinya should sweep clean,” said Cde Nyakuedzwa.
Zanu-PF provincial youth deputy chairperson Cde Mubuso Chinguno said women in Zimbabwe stand to benefit a lot, with the First Lady Dr Grace Mugabe at the helm of the Women’s League in Zanu-PF and Cde Chikwinya pulling the strings in Government.
“We are happy with the ministerial appointment of Cde Chikwinya. She is a strong and focused person with the capacity to meet or exceed expectations that come with her new job. She is an articulate, astute and tireless war veteran with a track record that proves her past exploits in women and community development work. She has seen it all and works well with all wings of the party,” said Cde Chinguno.
Students from local tertiary institutions also welcomed Professor Jonathan Moyo to the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development, saying his energy, skills and experience will “exorcise the ghost of mediocrity” that for years has haunted the ministry.

Residents’ bodies in the province have also welcomed Saviour Kasukuwere as the Local Government minister and expressed optimism that the combative minister will eliminate corruption in local authorities.
Minister Kasukuwere replaces Dr Ignatius Chombo, who is now in charge of the Home Affairs ministry where he takes over from Kembo Mohadi, who was moved to the State Security ministry.
Buhera North legislator Cde William Mutomba hailed the reassignment of Cde Muchinguri-Kashiri and expressed optimism that she would assist in the completion of Marovanyati Dam in Buhera.
Minister Muchinguri-Kashiri was in Buhera last week where she promised to push for the completion of the water body. She is now the power behind the ministry.
“Buhera cries for water and we are pinning our hopes on Cde Muchinguri-Kashiri. She understands the situation in Buhera better and we want her to act on Marovanyati Dam,” said Cde Mutomba.
