base with three teams expected to fight for honours in different sporting disciplines.
The three-day event will feature Thornhill Airbase from Gweru, Field Airbase from Chegutu and Manyame from Harare. It will end on Saturday.
Participants will compete in angling, athletics, basketball, shooting, badminton, boxing, chess, cricket, darts, golf, handball, hockey, lawn tennis, netball, pool, rugby, soccer, table tennis, taekwondo and martial arts, volleyball, skydiving and squash.
AFZ public relations officer, Tobias Mademe, said they are looking forward to a competitive competition as the event has continued to improve over the past years.
“Our competition has been growing over the past years. It has been running since the inception of the Air Force of Zimbabwe.
“We have had a new discipline introduced every year. Rugby has been running for three consecutive years and cricket has been running for two.
“We also have golf. It had gone down but it is resurfacing again this year. Through this competition from our inter-base we have managed to have some of our rugby teams competing in the national league and our cricket team in Manyame is affiliated to their province. Out of these competitions, that’s where we get some of our players playing for Blue Swallows and Chapungu in Division One football.”
“Some of the players are spotted through this event,” said Mademe.
He also said the event is a platform for the Air Force of Zimbabwe officers to interact among themselves and their families.
“The objective is to get a chance to interact in an environment that is a bit different from the working environment and we will have our families coming to be with us.
“The competition is conducted on a rotational basis. Last year we were at Field Airbase in Chegutu. We are expecting around 300 participants.
“There will be trophies to be won and it’s just a token because basically we are funding this on our own. There could be more if we get sponsors who want to support the various disciplines or a sponsor who can sponsor the whole tournament,” said Mademe.
Thornhill are the defending champions and will be hoping to retain their title.
