CHARLES Manyuchi’s Africa Boxing Union title triumph in the welterweight division against Burkina Faso’s Patrice Sou Toke last month has landed him in position 101 in the listings for his category. While the authenticity of the Boxing Records ratings has always been subject to debate, Manyuchi is not far from attracting global attention. He needs more fights both at home and outside the borders against rated boxers if he is to scale dizzy heights achieved by boxers from Zambia, Namibia and South Africa who have been world champions.
In the latest welterweight division rankings, which combine boxers from the World Boxing Association, World Boxing Council, World Boxing Organisation, World Boxing Federation, World Boxing Union, International Boxing Federation and International Boxing Organisation, he is number 101.
His ABU title fight earned him an automatic top 10 ranking with WBC. All continental champions whose bodies fall under WBC like ABU have their boxers automatically in line for title challenges.
His 101 ranking is the highest by a Zimbabwean in a long time and has given hope for the future of the sport in the country.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe’s top contender for the heavyweight title Elvis Victor Moyo will be in action in Pretoria in a non-title contest against John Venter.
The Zimbabwean is expected to win the fight and improve his ranking in the world something that could earn him more lucrative fights.
