CAPE TOWN. – South Africa’s High Commissioner to Mozambique Charles Nqakula said that people travelling to Mozambique’s capital Maputo for holiday or for business do not have to worry about their safety.
Those who want to visit Maputo will be able to do so without worrying about security, Nqakula told the South African Broadcasting Corporation.
The high commissioner made the remarks following the outbreak of guerrilla fighting in central Mozambique and a spate of kidnappings in Maputo. The tension has sent a number of foreigners fleeing the country.
The past two weeks have seen sporadic clashes between Renamo rebels and government military, raising fears that Mozambique is on the brink of a civil war.
There have been fears that people’s safety could be compromised if they visit that country.
“I do want to indicate that most of the problem is taking place in central Mozambique and not in Maputo,” Nqakula said.
“People who would like to visit Maputo for a holiday will be able to do this without any effect on their lives. In Maputo there are no problems at all.
“Maputo and surrounding areas are fairly safe with regards to visiting the country,” Nqakula said, adding many South Africans have been streaming into neighbouring Mozambique for business purposes.
“These South Africans have been able to engage with their counterparts and have gone home without any problems, Nqakula said. – Xinhua.
