A MARANGE woman whose violent assault on her 11-year-old daughter was captured on video and circulated widely on social media has been arrested, police have confirmed.

In the disturbing footage, the woman, identified as Idah Mushayi (27) of Village 28, Mount Zonwe under Chief Marange repeatedly strikes the child with a cow-hide neck strap (chitirobho).

At one point, she sits on the girl’s head lashing her. The child’s hands and legs were tied during the beating.

The video sparked widespread outrage as communities online and offline demanded immediate action and accountability.
Calls for her arrest intensified as the footage continued to spread.

National police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, said the Zimbabwe Republic Police is treating the matter seriously and reiterated that violence against children is a crime.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police refers to its recent social media post regarding a disturbing video circulating online, showing a woman severely assaulting a minor whose hands and legs were tied.

“Following investigations, the Zimbabwe Republic Police has arrested the suspect, Idah Mushayi (27), who is the biological mother of the child.
