Marondera Municipality has started establishing sports fields in Nyameni suburb aimed at encouraging youths in particular to engage in sporting activities.
Already, the targeted area is in the process of being cleared and the council has dedicated machinery, deployed for the establishment of these fields.
This was revealed by Marondera municipality spokesperson Mr Kudakwashe Tapfumaneyi in an interview with The Herald recently.
“Council is in the process of establishing multi-sport fields in the Nyameni suburb. These fields will accommodate various sports, including soccer, basketball, netball, volleyball, and handball,” he said.
“The primary goal of creating these fields is to encourage young people to engage in sports, both as a form of recreation and as a means of promoting overall wellness.
“Health practitioners have noted a concerning trend: an increasing number of individuals are being diagnosed with diabetes and high blood pressure at a young age.
“These health issues are often linked to sedentary lifestyles due to limited physical activity. Therefore, the establishment of these fields aims to promote physical activity among youth through sports, which could ultimately reduce the prevalence of diseases associated with inactive lifestyles.”
He said the council also hopes that the development will assist in the fight against drug and substance abuse.
