A Harare man claims his mistress wants to kill him if he does not marry her this December, and has now sought protection from the State.
Anthony Mukanyi of Mbare suburb appeared before Harare Civil Court magistrate Mr Larzim Ncube last Thursday, seeking a protection order against Rudo Kanyongo.
Mukanyi, whose age was not given, told the court that Kanyongo constantly abused him verbally, emotionally and physically. Kanyongo rents an apartment at Mbare Flats.
“She is forcing me to marry her, (but) I am now living with my wife. The respondent threatens that she will kill me before the month of December ends. I’m now living in fear since the respondent constantly abuses me,” reads part of his court application.
“She has a habit of verbally, emotionally and physically abusing me. She comes to my workplace to abuse me. On November 8, she came to my workplace and attacked me using weapons like bricks and knives. Wherefore, I pray that this Honourable Court may grant me a protection order against the respondent.”
Kanyongo refuted the allegations saying: “I went to his workplace to ask for rent money, but the conversation went bitter and he grabbed my wrist. I had to defend myself. That’s when people gathered and the next thing, he is taking me to court.
“I am his second wife and he was refusing to pay my rent. That’s why I had to go to his workplace to ask for money.” Mr Ncube granted Mukanyi’s application, ruling that Kanyongo faced arrest if she violated the protection order.
He said: “There are reasonable grounds for believing that the respondent has committed, is committing or is threatening to commit a breach of the protection order and that it is necessary or desirable to arrest the respondent in order to protect the complainant from serious or substantial harm, discomfort or inconvenience (whether physical, emotional or economic).”
