Marvin Chirume gets Ghana coaching gig

Sports Reporter

MARVIN Chirume, a former Zimbabwe rugby player and successful assistant coach for the Under-12 team, has landed a new and exciting opportunity as head coach for the Ghana national team.

Chirume has replaced Lovemore “Dallas” Kuzorera, another Zimbabwean and was announced as the new coach after meeting with members of the Ghana Rugby Board.

Chirume is a well-decorated development coach who has had great success in previous coaching roles.
He was part of the successful coaching staff of the Zimbabwe Under-20 rugby team, which won back-to-back Rugby Africa U20 Barthès Cup titles in 2022 and 2023 while working as assistant to Shaun De Souza.

In addition to the national junior side, Chirume also coaches at Old Hararians and Gateway High School, where he previously served as sports director.

Chirume’s rugby career began as a product of Prince Edward, a powerhouse in schoolboy rugby. Alongside playing with the Sables squad in 2003 and 2004, he played for the Tigers’ first team in 1996 and went on to play for Old Hararians for the next couple of years.

Meanwhile, the Bulawayo Metropolitan Rugby Football Board (BMRFB) Sevens League had a successful start, hosting 17 matches across both men’s and women’s categories at the Hartsfield Rugby Grounds recently.

The three ladies’ matches saw Matabeleland Warriors claim victory over Highlanders and Panthers, with a score of 20-0 and 17-5, respectively. Panthers then secured a 20-0 victory over Highlanders.

After the completion of the Zambezi Sevens Series in Harare at the end of last month, where two teams from Bulawayo – Matabeleland Warriors and Panthers – competed against teams from Zambia and Botswana, the local sevens league will run for three weeks.

Following its completion, there are also other tournaments such as the Unforgettable Sevens Series, with November as the target date, yet to be confirmed.
