ZIMBABWE national women’s cricket team captain, Mary Anne-Musonda got off her campaign in the FairBreak Invitational T20 tournament with Tornadoes to a losing start after a 41 runs loss against Falcons yesterday at the Kowloon Cricket Club in Hong Kong.
After winning the toss and electing to field first, Musonda’s Tornadoes restricted their opponents to 150/6 in 20 overs before they were limited to 109/9 in 20 overs to lose the first game of the 2023 edition.
Theertha Satish top scored for Falcons with 57 runs off 40 deliveries while Mariko Hill chipped in with 38 runs from 25 balls. Nannapat Koncharoenkai finished unbeaten on 17 runs off 12 balls as they were the top three leading run getters for the eventual winners. Sune Luus and Winifred Duraisingam took two wickets each for Tornadoes, giving away 38 and 34 runs respectively while Chanida Sutthiruang and Diana Baig took one scalp each.
In their chase, the Lady Chevrons skipper, coming in to bat at number six could only manage half a dozen runs off nine balls before she was caught off the bowling of Sornnarin Tippoch. Luus top scored for Tornadoes with 48 runs off 35 balls while Duraisingam made 13 runs from 23 balls. Tippoch finished with the figures 3/13 in four overs.
Up next for Musonda and Tornadoes is a clash against Warriors tomorrow morning. The 2023 FairBreak Invitational T20 is the second edition of the competition meant to run till 16 April 2023 at the Kowloon Cricket Club. The tournament, sanctioned by the International Cricket Council, is being privately run by FairBreak Global, a company that aims to promote gender equality. A total of 90 players from 28 countries spread across six teams.
An additional tournament for 2023, staged in collaboration with USA Cricket, will be played in Houston, Texas, USA, between 15 and 30 September 2023. – @brandon_malvin
