MARYMOUNT Teachers’ College has continued its streak of excellence, picking up two prestigious awards at the recently concluded Presidential Innovations Fair Awards held in Harare on December 11, 2025.
The college was named Best Innovating Teachers’ College, while its student, Mr Joseph Sithole Bhasera took home the Best Student Innovation in Arts and Humanities award.
These accolades are a testament to the college’s unwavering commitment to excellence, which has led to several ground breaking achievements.
The college’s impressive accomplishment includes – ensembling of a core group of young scientists for nurturing and driving STEM based researches and innovations.
Through groups activities, top-notch scientific interventions have been realised in the area of waste management, equipment maintenance, climatic change responses and water supply processes within the college.
The college has also posted ground-breaking innovations in apiculture resulting in the commercialisation of a variety of honey products. A lifesaving discovery has also been made when the colleges’ scientific investigations into the medicinal properties of the prickly pear plant resulted in the production of herbal hair shampoo and a variety of body lotions.
The college has also opened two practising schools in Manicaland Province where research in pedagogics are being carried out.
So far the college has carried out investigations into reading challenges by learners which resulted in challenges being identified and interventions are being tested.
The findings will be shared with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education for consideration.
Speaking on the side-lines of the awards, Marymount Teachers’ College Principal, Mr Martin Mukwazhe, applauded President Mnangagwa for his visionary leadership which has seen the introduction of the Education 5.0 model for higher and tertiary education in Zimbabwe.
“I want to applaud the President for making institutions of higher learning realise that without being innovative the country will lag behind in terms of educational relevance, technological advancement and industrialisation.
“It is my wish that Marymount Teachers’ College continues to be a key player in the practicalisation of this noble vision,” he said.
The awards are a fitting recognition of the college’s dedication to innovation and academic excellence, cementing its position as a leading institution in Zimbabwe’s teacher education sector.
The innovations that the college has posted can go a long way in making teachers’ colleges in Zimbabwe contribute immensely to the developmental agenda of the country.
