adminMasvingo magistrate Mrs Dorothy Mwanyisa solemnised Ms Masaiti (47)’s marriage to Mr Protais Pentecote Ayina (37) from the Cameroonian capital Yaoundé under Chapter 5:11 of the Marriage Act after the later finally produced original documents proving that he was a bachelor in his home country.
Zimbabwean laws do not allow somebody who is married elsewhere to enter into another marriage before the cancellation of the first marriage.
Ms Masaiti of Eastlea, Harare, who is a former Deputy Minister for Women’s Affairs and Community Development was a few weeks ago blocked from marrying Mr Ayina on the grounds that the MDC-T legislator’s Cameroonian lover did not have original documents proving that he was not married in his home country.
Mr Ayina had produced scanned documents which were rejected by the presiding magistrate Mr Jabulani Mzinyathi who ordered the couple to bring original documents to prove Mr Ayina’s marital status back in Cameroon.
Ms Masaiti could not be reached for comment as her mobile phone was not reacha-ble.
She was however, quoted in some sections of the media on Thursday as having said her decision to marry Mr Ayina was purely out of love.
“They (courts) should have asked me what my spouse is doing in life, not to think that he is coming here because he would want to have a marriage of convenience.
“I am now officially married, it was my choice, it was my spouse’s choice and it was out of love,” she was quoted saying.
