Mashonaland Central is celebrating one of its own after President Mnangagwa awarded Inasem Chitutu the prestigious Silver Cross of Zimbabwe during the Heroes Day commemorations in Harare.
Chitutu earned the honour for his extraordinary bravery in rescuing two children from a raging inferno.
During the Defence Forces Day celebrations at Chipadze Stadium on Tuesday, Chitutu received a hero’s welcome.
Crowds broke into cheers, with some lifting him up in jubilation.
Reflecting on his moment with the President, Chitutu admitted the experience was overwhelming.
“I was shaking, I almost collapsed,” he said.
“But the President greeted me warmly, made me stand beside him, and that calmed me down.
“He even said he would arrange for me to visit State House.
“My friends and relatives welcomed me back home with honour.”
Using his recognition as a platform, Chitutu urged young people to steer clear of drugs and substance abuse.
“If I had been intoxicated, I wouldn’t have been able to save those children,” he said.
He also expressed gratitude for a job offer from Bindura Municipality, which is still being finalised.
Community members have rallied behind Chitutu, hailing him as a role model.
Resident Medina Gatsi said his actions have inspired local youths.
“His bravery sends a powerful message to our youth especially about the dangers of drug abuse,” she said.
“He is an example of selflessness and upright morals in our community.”
Ward 11 Councillor Patrick Masango praised Chitutu for risking his life for strangers.
“Inasem has raised the Mashonaland Central flag high. He acted before our own fire brigade could arrive. As a council, we were moved by his courage. We made a resolution to offer him employment so he can live a decent life,” said Cllr Masango.
He added that Chitutu’s national recognition had inspired hope across the province.
“This shows that good deeds do not go unnoticed. It motivates other youths to act responsibly and be agents of positive change in their communities,” he said.
