THE Zimbabwe Ladies Golf Union has thrown its full weight behind teenage sensation Miriam Masiya as she prepares to tee off at the Africa Amateur Women’s Invitational set for February 4 to 7 at Royal Johannesburg’s East Course in South Africa.
ZLGU president Olivia Nyamwanza said the association is firmly backing the young golfer, who enjoyed a sensational 2025 season, dominating the local circuit and announcing herself as one of the country’s brightest sporting prospects.
Masiya’s rise has now earned her continental recognition after she became the only female golfer from Zimbabwe to be handpicked and invited by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews for this year’s prestigious championship.
The Joburg tournament presents a golden opportunity for the teenage prodigy, with the winner earning automatic entry into some of women’s golf’s most sought-after events. These include the Joburg Ladies Open, the Investec South African Women’s Open, the Waterfall City Tournament of Champions powered by Attacq, The Women’s Amateur Championship and the AIG Women’s Open Final Qualifying.
“Our star player Miriam Masiya is headed to the Africa Amateur Women’s Invitational in Johannesburg. She is the only girl from Zimbabwe invited by the Royal and Ancient of Scotland this year,” said Nyamwanza.
“She has been training hard for the tournament. We are rooting for her and wish her well as she carries the Zimbabwe flag on her young shoulders,” she added.
Nyamwanza described the tournament as a massive career stepping stone for Masiya, saying success could open doors to elite international competition.
“This is quite big especially if she can qualify for the other tournaments. Investec is sanctioned by the Sunshine Ladies Tour and that alone is massive. We are confident she will make us proud,” she said.
The Africa Amateur Women’s Invitational will be played alongside the Africa Amateur Championship at Royal Johannesburg’s East Course, offering a world class platform for the continent’s most promising amateur golfers.
The championships form part of The R&A’s long-term vision to develop African talent and create pathways to the global stage, a mission that now places Zimbabwe’s young star firmly in the spotlight.
