The Nissan Clover Leaf Motors St Thomas Aquinas Primary Schools Soccer Festival held in the city on Saturday was a huge success with 12 schools competing instead of the 13 that were expected.
St Thomas Aquinas Primary School headmaster Cuthbert Chiromo said:
“The event was a success and everyone was very happy with the performance and participation of the youngsters.”
The 12-team tournament hosted by St Thomas Aquinas Primary School saw the teams drawn in two groups of six. Each match lasted 20 minutes.
The festival which hosted visiting primary schools from as far as Hwange, Kwekwe, Matopo and Victoria Falls saw only one visiting and three Bulawayo teams progressing to the semi finals.
Masiyephambili Primary School thrashed Hwange’s Coalfields Primary 2-0 while Petra stunned St Thomas Aquinas in a 2-0 win getting them to the final of the tournament. The defending champions, Masiyephambili secured a 2-1 victory over Petra in the final.
Former Railstars, Shabanie Mine and Highlanders player Collin Nyambiya, ex-Highlanders and now Al-Shaab CSC defender Noel Kaseke attended the festival to scout players for a provincial team to represent the province in Harare at the Cheese Primary Schools provincial soccer tournament. They selected St Thomas’ Wallace Muzawazi, the top goal scorer as player of the tournament.
Jadias Goto the general manager of Nissan Clover Leaf Motors said, “The youngsters showed a remarkable performance and we had fun and we are willing to sponsor the competition next year.”
