Massive investment boosts telecommunication sector

In an interview, Eng Kundishora said the industry was one of the most developed industries as operators were always adapting to technological changes.
“I can confidently say that telecommunication companies are spearheading the ICT development because they are always coming up with new business strategies and innovations hence they grow each year,” he said.
He said growth is mainly occurring around mobile, internet and broadband provision.
“Both mobile operators and internet access providers will benefit from this wave of growth and the country will benefit also as mobile operators are the largest contributors to telecommunication revenues in Zimbabwe.
“Combined with the growth currently being experienced in mobile broadband internet provision, benefits to the banking sector in terms of internet banking usage are also increasing,” he said.
Eng Kundishora said increased competition was also contributing to the growth of the sector as it was resulting in constant upgrading.
“Quality of the mobile network in Zimbabwe is generally improving as most rural areas can access network also.”
He commended the private sector, especially Econet, for connecting Zimbabwe to the rest of the world through fibre optic cables.
He, however, said there was a need to keep on upgrading to keep up with the global trends which were always changing.
“Technology is too diverse and transitional, so to remain existent in this business, telecommunication companies need to be continually innovative in order to keep their market base,” he said.
