“I will not stand for election . . . But if the new team feels there is some unfinished business they want me to complete, I will consider the offer,” he said.
Mr Masunda said he was not moved by the on-going investigations against him. He is facing allegations of corruption in the awarding of a US$15 million tender to CABS for the construction of 3 000 low-cost houses in Budiriro.
Speaking on the sidelines to celebrate his recent UN award, the UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour, at Town House last week, Mr Masunda said he would not stand for any political office. But some councillors interviewed said Mr Masunda was afraid of losing contested elections hence his desire to be appointed. Mr Masunda has over the 54 months he has been in office flip-flopped on his desire for a second appointed term.
“I have done what I have done at a huge personal cost (accepting to be mayor of Harare). There are issues that needed to be fixed. I am happy with what I have achieved,” he said.
“One does not have to be involved in party politics to make a contribution.”
While Mr Masunda is happy with his personal achievements at Town House, many residents are not satisfied with service delivery during his tenure. Roads are in poor shape, water is not available and street lighting is at its worst.
“I have taken years to build myself. That image cannot be destroyed overnight. The investigations will yield nothing against me,” he said.
Mr Masunda said the investment by Old Mutual Plc through CABS was a show of confidence in Zimbabwe.
He said Old Mutual’s image took a battering when people’s investments lost value during the period of economic turmoil.
He said it took a lot of high level discussions to convince the company to commit resources to Zimbabwe.
