The contest for Zanu-PF’s Masvingo chairmanship is hotting up, with Chivi Rural District Council chairman Councillor Killer Zivhu being the latest to declare his interest on Tuesday to land the post.
If Clr Zivhu is eventually cleared to contest, he will likely battle it out against several other Zanu-PF officials in the elections whose dates have not yet been announced.
Zaka Central legislator Cde Paradzai Chakona is the acting provincial chairman after taking the reins from Retired Brigadier General Callisto Gwanetsa, who was ousted in a vote of no confidence in November last year.
Besides Clr Zivhu, who is also the ruling party provincial secretary for Finance, Cde Chakona is believed to be interested in becoming the substantive chair.
Masvingo provincial secretary for Administration and Masvingo West legislator Cde Ezra Chadzamira is also eyeing the same post, as is former Chiredzi South Member of Parliament and provincial spokesperson Cde Ailess Baloyi.
Speaking at Chindyamakono High School in Chivi on Tuesday where he accompanied provincial affairs Minister Shuvai Mahofa and together donated to the school’s girls soccer team, Cde Zivhu said he was ready to serve as the new Zanu-PF chairman for Masvingo.
“I have been approached by people from all walks of life in Chivi, from village heads, chiefs, councillors and ordinary Zanu-PF members who have asked me to take up the chairmanship of Zanu-PF in Masvingo,” he said.
“I want to make it clear that I have heard their request and I am more than ready to stand as Zanu-PF chairman for Masvingo province. Once election dates have been announced by the national party leadership, I will definitely throw my hat into the ring.’’
Clr Zivhu said he had the credentials to lead Zanu-PF in Masvingo province.
“I think I will be ready for the challenge,” he said.
“I have not yet started campaigning because the party has not yet given us the go-ahead to do so, but I am raring to go. I want to help in further strengthening Zanu-PF in Masvingo so that the opposition does not resurrect.’’
Cde Chadzamira also expressed interest to be the next Zanu-PF chairman.
“We will have to sit down as Zanu-PF and see who the leadership of the party and the people of Masvingo want to be chairman, if they choose me I will take it up,’’ he said.
Cde Baloyi also revealed that he was eyeing the post.
Cde Chakona could not be reached for comment as his phone was unreachable.
