Ms Dube attributed the improvement to the availability of teaching and learning resources, courtesy of a Government-Unicef partnership.
“This marked improvement has been mainly due to the availability of textbooks in every primary school in the province,” said Ms Dube.
The textbook ratio for primary school children now stands at 1:1 and the Unicef Education Transition Fund whose aim was to avail one textbook for each pupil made this possible.
Masvingo Province, which has a total of 849 primary schools, had only 51 schools recording a zero percent pass rate, which was a great improvement compared to the previous year. This improvement has also been attributed to the mid-year Grade 7 tests introduced last year by the National Association of Primary School Heads (NAPH).
In addition each district in the province has been provided with twin cab vehicles by the Ministry of Education, Sport, Arts and Culture and this enables the district education officers to closely monitor and supervise the schools within their jurisdiction.
Masvingo District recorded the highest pass rate followed by Chiredzi District. The school with the highest pass rate in the whole province was Shakashe Primary School in Masvingo urban district, which attained a 100 percent pass rate. Seventeen pupils managed to attain four units at the school.
In second, third and fourth place respectively were Gokomere, Hellen McGhie and Citrus Primary schools, which all recorded a 95,8 percent pass rate.
