MASVINGO TOPS DOG BITES, FOLLOWED BY MASH EAST

THE statistics are out — you were more likely to be bitten by a dog in Masvingo, than any other province in this country, during the week between the start of the Year and January 5.

The province topped the list when it came to dog bites in the week ending January 5 this year.

There were more than 600 dog bites cases reported countrywide, according to the Ministry of Health’s Weekly Disease Surveillance Report.

The cumulative figures for dog bites in Masvingo were 635 cases, with no deaths recorded.

The Ministry that the Weekly Disease Surveillance Report is for the week ending January 5 this year.

“635 dog bite cases and no deaths were reported this week.

“Of the reported cases, 141 (22 percent) were bitten by vaccinated dogs, 118 (18 percent) by unvaccinated dogs,and 366 (60 percent) by dogs of unknown status.

“The highest number of dog bite cases reported this week were from Masvingo Province (136) and Mashonaland East Province (112).

“The cumulative figures for dog bites are 635 cases and zero deaths.”

The Weekly Disease Surveillance Report also noted 499 malaria cases and three deaths were reported this week.

“The deaths were reported from Mutare District (three) in Manicaland Province.

“Of the reported cases, 52 (10.4 percent) were from under-five-years of age.

“The provinces that reported the highest number of cases were Manicaland (244) and Mashonaland Central (110).

“The cumulative figures for malaria cases are 499 and three deaths.”

The Ministry also revealed that 5 977 common diarrhoea cases and five deaths were reported.

The deaths were reported from Chipinge District (three) in Manicaland and Sally Mugabe Hospital (two) in Harare.

There were 455 dysentery cases and no deaths were reported.
