POLICE in Matabeleland North are undergoing intensive training in preparation for the United Nations World Trade Organisation (UNWTO) general assembly to be co-hosted by Zimbabwe and Zambia in August. In an interview on Thursday, Matabeleland North provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Siphiwe Makonese said the preparations were at an advanced stage.
“The officers are being taught and equipped on protocol and procedures, customer care, discipline, European languages and other issues pertaining to security.
“This will help them better manage invited dignitaries, tourists and members of the public in Victoria Falls during that period,” said Asst Insp Makonese.
She said the provincial police updating centre is responsible for the training of the officers.
“The province has set up four teams namely Victoria Falls, Hwange, Lupane and Nkayi to act as operational policing districts. We have had other Government arms coming in to boost preparations such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in providing help on security and protocol issues,” said Asst Insp Makonese.
She said other provinces were also training police that would be deployed in smaller numbers.
“We are privileged to be policing a province with one of the world’s wonders hosting the general assembly alongside Zambia,” said Asst Insp Makonese.
