This will be the first time for the competition which is sponsored by the Zifa president Cuthbert Dube to be played in this part of the country.
The teams will come from Gwanda North, Gwanda South, Beitbridge, Matobo, Bulilima, Mangwe, Umzingwane and Insiza.
Dube said the competition was in honour of his late wife Sylvia who was the patron of former Premiership club Buymore.
“My wife had a passion for football and I remember when Buymore FC was formed it was a social team and she used to provide refreshments and other things to the boys after their matches. She was the most beautiful woman and the Sylvia Dube Memorial Soccer tournament is meant to celebrate her life.
“The competition has been played in the Northern and Eastern Regions as well as Masvingo Province. This year after being approached by the Zimbabwe Women’s Soccer League vice-chairperson Cecilia Malunga the tournament will be played in Gwanda. We want to support the Girl Child and spread the sport to other areas,” Dube said.
He could not be drawn into revealing the total sponsorship package for the competition.
Sylvia passed on in 2001 and the competition in Gwanda will be the 12th edition.
