MATCH OF THE LAY

CURACAO World Cup stars are being urged to share rooms with their Wags and have sex before matches to give them “emotional support”.

The minnows are the smallest ever nation to qualify for the World Cup with a population of just over 150,000.

They have only scored once at the tournament so far but picked up their first point in a 0-0 draw with Ecuador this weekend.

Curacao, managed by ex-Sunderland boss Dick Advocaat, still have a small chance of reaching the knockouts of the competition.

And their team doctor is encouraging them to keep active in the bedroom before games to give them a small edge.

Suzanne Huurman says Advocaat has let players share rooms with their partners to help the squad stay calm at their Florida base.

She said: “Players can stay with their teammates in the same room and, when there are children, the family receives an additional room.

“It’s something quite unique in national team football. Curacao is a small country, with a very cheerful, warm and family-oriented people, something that reminds me a lot of Brazil.

“Yes, I believe sex helps, but perhaps more on the emotional side than for a direct physiological effect.

“In such a long tournament, having the family around reduces homesickness a little and brings tranquillity.”

Most teams are given strict orders to live separately from Wags at World Cups.

Fabio Capello infamously forced strict curfews at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and limited players’ time with partners.

But Huurman said it was a different situation for Curacao because they don’t have anywhere near the same level of experience or funding.

She added: “Many of our players do not play at the highest levels of world football.

“For many families, it would be too expensive to travel and stay for weeks in the United States on their own.

“The federation decided to assume this cost so that the players can have their partners and children nearby. Some would probably be worried or stressed.”

Curacao were thumped 7-1 by Germany in their World Cup opener – but did have a euphoric moment after initially equalising in the first half.

They then held out for an impressive 0-0 draw with Ecuador which leaves them two points off Ivory Coast in second.

It was an incredible historic moment for the players, who secured their first ever World Cup point to leave fans in tears.

However, they’ll have to beat the Ivorians in their last group game – and hope Germany beat Ecuador – to have any chance of reaching the knockouts – Sun.
