Renowned mbira group Nyamasvisva NeMawungira eNharira who have become a regular at the Book Cafe will tonight return for another mbira event at the joint. The mbira outfit will be supported by upcoming talented mbira group Matendera Ekumabvazuva. In an interview with The Herald Entertainment, Mawungira eNharira front-man Wilfred ‘Nyamasvisva’ Maafrika promised an explosive traditional mbira night.
“We are just urging those who enjoy traditional music especially mbira to come in numbers as we are promising an energetic mbira night,” he said.
He also said they have finished recording a single “Soko Mukanya”, a song that Nyamasvisva has dedicated to his mother and all people from the Soko clan.
“We have finished recording a single that I have dedicated to my mother who comes from the Soko clan.
On the song I will be appreciating where I came from and I am sure people will enjoy the single,” he said.
Nyamasvisva added that they are also working on an album to be released before the year ends.
“We last released our last album in 2011 and we feel its high time that we give something to our fans, in fact we wanted to release the album last year but because of some challenges that were beyond our control we failed but we are promising to do it this year,” he said.
Madendera eKumabvazuva leader Lovemore Salari said mbira is part and parcel of Zimbabwe’s culture hence the need to preserve it.
“We are promising nothing but the best both in mbira sound and in the message that unites Zimbabweans and encourage people to respect their identity,” he said.
Mawungira eNharira was formed by Nyamasvisva in 2003 and the group has six albums to its credit.
The group has over the years mesmerised fans with a celebration of rich and traditional music with the mbira instrument taking centre stage while Matendera eKumabvazuva has now become the new popular outfit after winning a mbira clash last year.
