THE death toll in the Tuesday accident in which four people died on the spot while eight others were injured when a Nissan NV350 kombi veered off the road and overturned before landing on its roof has risen to six.
The accident occurred at the 52-kilometre peg along Harare-Mukumbura Road at around 9.50am.
Bodies of the victims were taken to Concession Hospital mortuary for post-mortem, while the injured were admitted to the same hospital.
In a separate accident, five people were killed while 18 others were injured at the 101 kilometre peg along Mvurwi-Kanyemba Road, Mahuwe, on May 12 at around 5pm.
A Hino Dutro with 35 passengers on board veered off the road and overturned before landing on its wheels.
The accident occurred while the truck was descending a steep slope and approaching a sharp curve.
Police have since named some of the victims who died in the two accidents.
In a statement, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said, “Reference is made to the Zimbabwe Republic Police post on X platform on May 13, 2025 regarding two fatal road traffic accidents which occurred at 101 kilometre peg along Mvurwi-Kanyemba Road in Mahuwe on May 12, 2025 and at the 52 kilometre peg along Harare-Mukumbura Road on May 13, 2025 in which a total of nine people were killed.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police releases the names of the five victims who were killed in the Mahuwe accident.”
They are Gilbert Katyamakwara (50), Nelisa Majasi (8), Nevy Samunawu, all of Chitauro Village, Chief Bepura, Guruve, Chiseche Mafuta (48), a female adult of Magaya Village, Chief Bepura, Guruve and Murambiwa Joyce (49, a female adult of Marumahoko Village, Chief Bepura, Guruve.
“Meanwhile, the death toll in the Mazowe road traffic accident has risen to six. Five of the six victims who were killed in the Mazowe accident were identified by their next,” Comm Nyathi said.
They are Future Chikudza (53), a male adult of Zimre Park, Harare, Tatenda Samatha Ngundu (29) from Munyarari Village, Zimunya, Mutare, Heather Mashiri (70) of South View, Harare, Flosky Ngundu (5 months) of Munyarari Village, Zimunya, Mutare and
Anotida Denzel Mawadze (19) of Westlea, Harare.
The other victim, a woman is yet to be identified by the next of kin.
Comm Nyathi said, “The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that motorists should prioritise road safety and avoid speeding. Above all, drivers are urged to abide by the country’s road rules and regulations to curb road accidents and safeguard human lives.”
