MAZOWE High School boys’ and Mufakose 2 girls’ are the 2013 Under-17 volleyball champions.
Mazowe High School edged the defending champions Visitation 3-0 in the Under-17 boys’ final yesterday at Inyathi Mission in Bubi. Mufakose 2 defeated Chivi High School 3-2 in a tricky final with both teams deserving winners though the former emerged the best.
On Saturday Mazowe thrashed Gaza 2-0 in boys’ semi-finals while Visitation won 2-1 against Vimbai High School to book their tickets to the final on the next day.
In the girls’ section Mufakose 2 defeated Chikangwe 2-1 in another semi-final Chivi won 2-1 against Chirichoga High School.
Michelle Munyadzi from Chikangwa was the most valuable player, while Tsitsi Makoni from Marondera High School was crowned best attacker in the girls’ category.
Ashley Maponga from Mazowe High School was the most valuable player in the boys’ category, while Blessing Mlambo from St Ignatius was the best attacker.
Matabeleland Schools Inyathi, Mpopoma and Fatima had a disappointing campaign as they crashed out in the group stages.
Luveve and Matopo High Schools boys’ and St James and Singwango High School girls reached the quarter-finals.
Pertua Masarira the Nash volleyball head-in-change said she is happy with the standard of competition in the Under-17 age-group.
“I’m very happy with rural schools such Dindinyongwe and Chirichoga the challenge they put up shows that the standard of play has changed in the Under-17s,” said Masarira.
