persons without gloves and disinfectants.
Mazowe River Bridge Centre developed a c-scheme to house the elderly who are too old, unwell and physically challenged so that they could easily be identified and receive proper care.
Administrator for the centre Mr Esbert Vheremu said it was difficult to take care of the elderly without sanitation facilities.
“We are asking for the corporate world to assist us with detergents, disinfectants, laundry machines and gloves.
“We need to uphold cleanliness at all times so that we can live longer just like the elders. Due to lack of finances we cannot afford to buy all these materials, so at the end of the day we prioritise on buying food items instead,” he said.
The c-scheme houses about eight elders out of the 72 who live in the area and has very unbearable living conditions such as broken windowpanes which made it cold and windy during the winter.
There was also no lighting.
Mr Vheremu said there were improper bedding facilities as most of the material was old.
“We have no mattresses, beds and linen, we need finances to renovate the whole area and improve living conditions for the elderly,” he said.
In an interview a spokesperson for the elders Ambuya Shupikai Maruku said: “Most of us sleep on the floor while only a few sleep on beds. The floor often becomes very cold especially that we are in winter, we need more blankets.”
She said there was no transport to cater for the elderly health needs and physiotherapy equipment.
“We need a car to transport the elderly for regular health check ups. At the moment we have a number of elders who need to go for eye cataract surgeries and we have managed to send some using borrowed cars,” she said.
Mr Vheremu said they had plans to renovate the c-scheme.
“We want to create private rooms for these particular elders and improve specialised care for them.
“And especially focus on cleanliness, as it is a major challenge that we are facing.
