THREE male and two female teams were selected to represent Manicaland Basketball Association at the Unity Day Tournament to be held in Harare.

Manicaland Basketball Association spokesperson, Taurai Dhliwayo, confirmed that Mercenaries, Titans and Dangamvura Knights, Nets and Sharks ladies are among the 16 teams that will participate in this year’s edition of the tournament slatted for December 21 and 22 at Richwood Park.

Among the teams to take part are Gweru Unicorns, Raiders, Cameo, Vixens, Arcadia Bucs, Greenstars, Side Lakers and Real Returners from Harare, Bulawayo, Masvingo and Gweru.

Harare-based JBC Basketball Club will be hosting this year’s edition of the Unity Day Tournament. The tournament was launched in 2013 to commemorate and celebrate the life of the late national team coach and local basketball legend, Ronald Garura, who passed away in 2012.

Selected teams to represent Manicaland are log leaders in the ongoing MBA league. Dangamvura Knights, Mercenaries and Titans are positions one, two and three holders in the males section, while Nets and Sharks are the leaders in the females section.

“We have selected the best teams to represent us at the Unity Day Tournament, but there are also good players in other teams who could not make it. As we continue with our MBA season, we are picking up those individuals and fit them into the five teams so that we emerge victorious in Harare.

It is also a good thing that we have more than one female team from this end taking part in the tournament. Besides being there to honour the legend, it is a chance to expose our players to bigger clubs so that they get a chance to go further in this sport,” said Dhliwayo.

He appealed to the Manicaland business community and basketball fans for donations to make the Harare trip a success.
