THE Mbare Body-building and Fitness contest is set to bounce back at Stoddard Hall tomorrow afternoon after a 10-year hiatus.
The contest, which has several categories, will be held at district level. Local athletes are being urged to take part in the events before going for the national finals to boost competition.
Mbare body-building and Fitness chairman Knowledge Gunda believes it is a step in the right direction that the contest returns after such a long absence.
“We are going to have the Mbare Body-building and Fitness contest which is aimed to promote the sport of body-building especially in the high density suburbs.
“This event used to be an annual programme and was by then sponsored by the City of Harare. But when they pulled out it became difficult for us and we had to seek private players who are now supporting us.
“We are affiliated to Harare Province as a district and the national federation who have been very supportive. Our aim is to bring back the sport to the people and we are looking to have more upcoming juniors jumping on board.
“This event is mainly for beginners, who will be looking forward to taking part in national contests in the future.
“We have a challenge where some local athletes had lost hope but things are shaping up and we look forward to a good turnout,” said Gunda.
The hulk, who is a co-owner of Stoddard Gym with Kennedy Kachiruka, said they have several categories lined up.
“We will have the junior men body-building below 21 years, senior men body-building, men’s physique open, men’s fitness open and women wellness development.
“The contest is open to all athletes from other suburbs like Highfield, Chitungwiza, Mufakose, Mabvuku among several others.
“We are hopeful we will have more corporates and individuals coming on board so that we help athletes to take the sport seriously and make sure that we have drug-free generations,” added Gunda.
