Construction of permanent structures at Mbare Retail Market, which was significantly damaged by a devastating fire earlier this month, has started.
Harare Mayor, Cllr Jacob Mafume, announced the start of the reconstruction project during a press conference held at Town House on Sunday.
The Mayor confirmed that the City of Harare has allocated funds from daily revenue collections to initiate the rebuilding process.
“We have been in discussions with the parent Ministry, the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works. We have come up with an agreement on the way forward which was endorsed by the sitting of the joint committees of council which agreed to work on the urgent basis of reconstructing the Mbare Market,” he said.
The fire, which occurred on the 10th of this month, resulted in substantial losses for over 5 000 individuals, including the market’s 1 500 registered tenants and approximately 3 500 sub-tenants.
