MBCA chief teller allegedly swindles bank of US$50 000

with theft of trust property.

He appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Kudakwashe Jarabini who remanded the matter to May 30 for trial after Ruswa’s lawyer, Mr Charles Chinyama, requested for time to go through the State papers.
According to the State, Ruswa was responsible for the supervision of bank tellers, management of branch’s cash holding limits and cash flow, accepting cash deposits and paying out cash to customers.

He was the custodian of the branch’s Automated Teller Machine (ATM) responsible for cash replenishments and reconciliation of the ATM suspense account and had a unique teller identity number and operating a till account number USD100001200. He also had access to the ATM suspense account number USD112050001.
Allegations are that between May last year and January this year, Ruswa who was the acting assistant branch manager since the incumbent was on leave, took advantage of his post and stole money from his till account number USD100001200.

It is alleged he changed his encashment authorisation limit from US$5 000 to US$100 000 so that the system would allow him to transact amounts above US$5 000 without referring the transactions to his superiors for authorisation.
To cover up for the offence, Ruswa, it is alleged would create fictitious entries showing credits to the ATM suspense account number USD112050001 thereby reducing the ATM balance and increasing his till account balance.

Again to conceal the offence and for him to balance at the end of the day, Ruswa allegedly created fictitious entries with the same amounts he had used to credit the ATM suspense account and debit his till account with the same amounts, it is alleged.
Mr Liberty Gono prosecuted.
