Mbira explosion at Nharira

extravaganza takes place at Nharira Cultural Centre in Norton tomorrow.
More than six groups including Mbira Dzenharira, Hwevambira, Nhare Dzechirorodziva, Rovambira, Mbira Dzenharo and Mbira Dzemuninga will alternate on stage to entertain fans at a festival that has become one of the most prominent features on the music scene.
What makes the gig a must-attend is that this year it has managed to attract some of the country’s top mbira groups.
Mbira Dzenharira are on top of their game with a string of hit albums to their name.
Hwevambira, on the other hand, are famous for their unique style and their album “Misumo” recorded at Corner Studios made them one of the most sought-after outfits in the country.
The group will give a foretaste of new songs off their forthcoming album titled “Global Warming” that carries potential hits like “Zvatumwa”, “Tiri Tose”, “Nyamavhuvhu” and the title track “Global Warming”.
The rest of the groups are also set to prove their mettle in this star-studded line-up and mbira lovers will indeed be spoilt for choice.
Show organiser Donald Nyamayaro, who is also the manager and a member of Hwevambira, said this year’s festival was going to be bigger and better than the previous ones.
“It is going to be a bigger and better show because we have prominent mbira groups in the country,” said Nyamayaro.
In Zimbabwe, mbira music is now played at social gatherings and is purely artistic.
The music has grown to dizzy heights and thanks to pioneers like Ambuya Stella Chiweshe more women including the likes of Chiwoniso Maraire and Hope Masike have popularised the mbira genres across many social spheres.
