A bright future is unfolding on the chessboard for 14-year-old Kelly Mbondo, a pupil at Mpopoma High School, who has set her sights on international success after an impressive victory at the Zimbabwe Cadets and Youth Chess Championships 2026.

The Form Three learner recently claimed the Under-16 Girls title at the national junior tournament held at Dominican Convent Harare, where more than 230 young players from across the country battled for honours in one of Zimbabwe’s most competitive youth chess competitions.

Mbondo finished top of the Under-16 Girls category, ahead of Grace Zvarebwa and Rhema Magomo, demonstrating composure and strategic brilliance throughout the tournament.

The category featured 30 participants, making her achievement even more impressive as she navigated a challenging field of talented young players.

“I am very happy with this achievement because I worked hard to prepare for the tournament,” said Mbondo.

“This victory motivates me to keep improving my game. My dream is to represent Zimbabwe well at international tournaments and make my school and family proud.”

Her triumph has opened doors to bigger stages, with Mbondo now set to represent Zimbabwe at the African Youth Chess Championship scheduled for May 14-23 in Uganda and the World Youth Chess Championship set for June 14-27 in Italy.

Mbondo believes these opportunities will give her valuable exposure against some of the best young chess players in the world.

“It is exciting to know that I will have the chance to compete at the African and World championships,” she said.

“I want to learn from other players, gain more experience and continue growing as a chess player.”
However, the young chess star says she will require financial support to make the dream of competing on the continental and global stage a reality.

“I am appealing for support from well-wishers and sponsors who can help me travel and participate in these tournaments. It would mean a lot to me to represent my country and show what I can do on the international stage,” she said.

For Mbondo, the journey is only just beginning. With determination, discipline and growing confidence on the board, the young Mpopoma High School learner is now aiming to take her game beyond Zimbabwe’s borders and test herself against the best young chess minds on the continent and across the world.
