“Harare has become an eyesore,” she said.
Mrs Kay was addressing party supporters who had just completed a clean up operation at the Speke Avenue Bus Terminus (Copacabana).
“Your efforts here are highly commendable. It is my sincere wish that every urbanite wherever they are emulate this good gesture of keeping their cities clean,” said Mrs Kay.
Her comments come as the city is still to buy the 27 refuse trucks that it promised residents two months ago following protracted complaints over poor garbage collection. The city has 24 refuse trucks but only 18 are operational against a requirement of 47 such vehicles to fully service the city’s 46 wards. Expectations were that the situation would have improved by now had the Isuzu trucks been bought to complement the existing fleet. Paza Buster and Croco Motors won the tenders valued at US$6 million to supply the vehicles. A check with the companies showed that they were still to receive official orders from council since a resolution to buy the refuse equipment was passed sometime this year.
