JOURNALISTS, media professionals and civil society actors have reiterated the vital role of the media in advocating for accountability and tracking progress within the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC).

This came out at a recent engagement in Harare, where it was resolved that the media should translate policy frameworks into tangible benefits for regional citizens.

One of the main topics of discussion was the importance of strengthening media advocacy. Participants highlighted how a robust media presence can foster an informed and engaged citizenry. By simplifying complex issues and promoting public awareness, the media plays a critical role in holding leaders accountable.

Ms Janet Zhou, the country manager of the Southern African Trust, shared her insights on the significance of making the SADC treaty a “living document”.

She referred to Article 5 of the treaty, which aims to enhance economic, social, and cultural ties across the region.
