MISA Zimbabwe has urged media practitioners to elevate the discourse on environmental challenges to combat them.
Speaking during belated Press Freedom Day commemorations in Harare today, MISA Harare Chapter Treasurer, Ms Bridget Mabanda, emphasised the media’s pivotal role in bringing attention to pressing environmental issues.
The World Press Freedom Day, celebrated annually on 3 May, was this year held under the theme Press for the Planet: Journalism in the face of the Environmental Crisis.
Ms Mabanda highlighted the environmental challenges affecting the global community, including Zimbabwe.
“There is a need for the media to focus on climate change, deforestation, pollution and loss of biodiversity. These issues require comprehensive coverage and investigation so that we raise awareness and mitigate the challenges of climate change and environmental degradation for a sustainable future,” she said.
National police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, who was also present at the event said, “As the Zimbabwe Republic Police, we are there to work together with the media and ensure that their duty is executed freely.
“We are there to work together and exchange notes for the benefit of the country.”
