A schools rugby match pitting Goldridge College and Heritage High School had to be cut short after a medic disappeared into thin air at Kwekwe on Saturday with the former leading 15-5.The match was called off with just 10 minutes of the second half played after both sets of coaches agreed to share the spoils much to the displeasure of the Kwekwe side which had looked set to win the game.
In an interview yesterday, Simbarashe Danga from the Zimbabwe Rugby Referees Society confirmed the development and said each team got three points after consultations. “The match was cut short during the second half as the two teams played 10 minutes because the medics had gone and it is the referee’s responsibility to stop the match when such things occur.
“A rugby match cannot go on given such a circumstance whereby professionally trained medics abandon the match. The referee or relevant officials are bound by regulations to end the game immediately because it is the referee’s responsibility to safeguard the players’ lives and so he has the power to stop the match if he feels that proceeding might endanger the lives or wellbeing of the players,” Danga said.
In other matches, Bulawayo’s Christian Brothers College thrashed Kyle College 28-10, with Falcon college beating St Georges 20-18 while Peterhouse were 48-19 victors over Churchill 19.
Midlands Christian College walloped Watershed 66-6.
