Mhango relishes encounter against former paymasters

HIGHLANDERS’ midfielder Winston Mhango says there is no extra motivation than facing his former club FC Platinum in the Chibuku Super Cup quarter-finals at Baobab Stadium in Mhondoro Ngezi tomorrow afternoon.

Mhango’s last game for FC Platinum was in December 2018 after five years with the reigning Premier Soccer League champions.

He then crossed the Zambezi River to join Zambian league side Kabwe Warriors.

Three years later, he finds himself coming up against his former teammates donning the black and white Bosso jersey, and says he has no attachment to the club anymore.

“I have nothing to prove to FC Platinum. They are just like any other team; we just respect them. I have played for them and l have done my part there. However, now my focus is on Highlanders and l have to do my best for Highlanders.

“It’s not going to be an easy game, but we have to go there and fight. They have a good side and so do we. If we show character and put in the hard work, we can come up with a positive result,” said Mhango.

The midfielder missed Bosso’s last group game owing to injury, but has now recovered and is in line for a starting place together with utility player Pritchard Mphelele.

Mhango was also among the players that missed the early stages of the Chibuku Super Cup while awaiting his international clearance.

“We have been working hard from the time we were waiting for our clearances. We would encourage the other guys to fight hard for the club’s cause and they did,” said Mhango.

On the tight competition for central midfield positions in the Bosso starting line-up where he competes with Adrian Silla and Nqobizitha Masuku, Mhango said: “It’s a little bit tricky, but l believe competition is everywhere. The important thing is how you intercut and combine with other players. As a senior player, my duty is to encourage the youngsters to be even better than me.”

In other quarter-final matches, Chicken Inn clash with Ngezi Platinum Stars in tomorrow morning’s kick-off before Bosso take on FC Platinum in the afternoon.

On Sunday, Cranborne Bullets encounter Harare City in the morning, with Dynamos playing Black Rhinos in the afternoon.
