Mighty Warriors makes progress

MIGHTY Warriors coach Sithethelelwe “Kwinji 15” Sibanda is satisfied with progress her side is making as they gear up for their Africa Women Cup of Nations first leg tie against Namibia in Windhoek early next month. The Mighty Warriors ended several months of inactivity when they trooped into camp early this week at ZIFA Village.

“For the past few days, we thought of addressing the physical fitness levels.
“But the fact that we were already late, we couldn’t really go through all the procedures and we did a lot of integrated training like doing a lot of technical conditioning so that we address the physical part and technical part at the same time.
“Of course, in terms of fitness levels they are not yet there. But we like the response. They are improving with each day, so come match day I think they will be in a better position to perform,” said Sibanda.

Their opponents have been busy ahead of the tie scheduled for April 5 since early February.
Both the Mighty Warriors and Namibia were at the COSAFA Women’s Championships in September last year.
Zimbabwe reached the final while Namibia bowed out in the group stages.

But Sibanda yesterday made it clear they are not underestimating their opponents and said it will amount to how much either side would have put in for the match.
“They are a good technical side, nowadays there are no small teams and countries are putting a lot in developing their women football.

“We have been tracking their record, as far as we are concerned they are a better prepared side than us now because of what they have done in terms of their preparations.

“We are not going to be complacent and just say we are Zimbabwe we will qualify.”
The trio of Emmaculate Msipa, Felistas Muzongondi and Mavis Chirandu are coping after taking a break for some time last year when they were undergoing military training.

“From the training sessions they are up there, they are really working,” said Sibanda.
