Blessings Chidakwa in Kadoma
Government has allocated 30 vehicles worth $1,3 million to the country’s district administrators, as most of their operations were being hamstrung by perennial transport shortages.
Although the cars are not enough for all the country’s 73 districts, each province has been allocated three vehicles.
Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Minister July Moyo handed over the vehicles at a closed-door function held in Kadoma yesterday afternoon.
Minister of State for Mashonaland West Provincial Affairs Webster Shamu and other senior Government officials witnessed the ceremony.
Speaking in an interview after the event, Local Government, Public Works and National Housing deputy principal director (planning) Ms Charity Malunguza said Government spent more than $1 million to acquire the vehicles.
“The total cost for these 30 Isuzu single cab vehicles is $1,3 million. We followed proper Government procedure to procure these cars,” she said.
“As of distribution, we have 73 districts in all the country’s 10 provinces.
“Therefore, due to budget constraints, we failed to procure for all the districts, but as of now we have allocated three cars per each province.”
Ms Malunguza said Government will, however, buy cars for the remaining districts. Mhondoro-Ngezi district administrator Mrs Fortunate Muzulu commended Government for making efforts to improve their conditions of service.
“This a welcome development coming from leaders in the new dispensation. These cars will indeed serve their purpose,” she said.
