ZIMBABWE’S Mighty Warriors turned on the power and brushed aside Eswatini in their second Cosafa Cup Women Championship Group C encounter at the Wolfson Stadium, Port Elizabeth, South Africa yesterday.
A goal each from Susan Nyama in the first half, Marjory Nyaumwe and Felistas Muzongondi in the second stanza were enough to guarantee Zimbabwe maximum points.
The Mighty Warriors, who chalked off a 1-0 win over Namibia in their opening game on Thursday, are now well on course to qualify for the semifinals and can go through with a draw against Uganda on Monday if Namibia beats or draws against the East African guest nation this afternoon.
Coach Sithethelelwe “Kwinji 15” Sibanda made six changes to the squad that did duty in the opening game, bringing in Lindiwe Magwede, Sithembile Nyoni, Danai Bhobho, Berita Kabwe, Mavis Chirandu and Nyama for Chido Dzingirai, Nobukhosi Ncube, Muzongondi, Kudzai Chiparausha, Erina Jeke and 2017 Cosafa Cup Golden boot winner, Rutendo Makore.
Captained by Nobuhle Majika, the girls responded and put up a scintillating display which, with a bit of luck, could have seen them score more than three goals.
They now top Group C from their two games and go into two days rest before they are back on the pitch for the Ugandan tie on Monday.
The top team from each group, plus the best-placed runners-up, advance to the semifinals.
If the Mighty Warriors emerge as group winners, as is expected, they will then square off against fellow winners from Group A but if they progress as best runners up, their opponents will be winners of Group B.
The Mighty Warriors were crowned Cosafa Cup Women Championship champions on home soil in 2011, beating South Africa 1-0.
