The Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe has said the US$33 million Presidential Well-wishers Inputs Scheme will enhance grain production among small holder farmers and boost national food security.
In a recent statement, GMAZ national chairman Mr Tafadzwa Musarara said: “This scheme is the biggest direct agro-inputs assistance ever committed by any Head of State in Africa.
“GMAZ is committed to buying all grains that will be offered on the market. The milling industry is fully aware of its moral obligation in the economy to provide a lucrative market for grain produce, especially maize and wheat.”
He added that as the country anticipated the biggest harvest in a decade, all relevant arms of Government should curb imports of maize meal and flour as this would affect local producer prices.
Although grain imports initially saved the country at their inception, their continued existence has impacted negatively on the economy due to job losses, poor producer prices and company closures, read part of the statement.
Only 25 out of the 300 millers operating in January 2009 are functioning.
The worst-hit are small millers who served the country during the most difficult times.
