TWENTY-TWO basketball teams are scheduled to clash in the 6th edition of the Milton High School Schools Basketball Invitational Tournament in Bulawayo tomorrow. The tourney, that has attracted schools from as far as Harare, with Churchill High expected to take part, would be played at the school’s courts from 8am.
There are two sporting codes that teams would be involved in this year, namely basketball and volleyball.
Milton High sports director Tangawamira Tawedzerwa said although they would have loved to include football, it was not possible because they sent invitation letters late.
“Football was there last year but this year we have only volleyball and basketball. As we go on, we would like to see more sporting codes being played to grow the sports day,” he said.
The tournament is an annual event that is traditionally held two weeks before the NASH Bulawayo Province Top Schools qualifiers. It is now a permanent feature in the schools sports calendar since its inception in 2009.
The event has grown from just involving schools from the Bulawayo Central district to incorporating school teams from mostly rural Matabeleland provinces, Midlands, Bulawayo and Harare.
Other schools scheduled to take part include Minda and Empandeni from Matabeleland South, Regina Mundi, Chaplin, and Thornhill from Gweru and St James’ from Matabeleland North.
The invitational tourney has this year partnered with Tilus Supermarket group, one of the leading retail outlets in Bulawayo.
Tilus marketing official, Priscilla Lambert said they would be providing all the medals and trophies as well as other marketing materials.
“We are proud to be associated with Milton and intend borrowing a leaf from our slogan, ‘Friends for Life’ to assist the school every year and ensure the tournament grows. We are pleased to be taking part in a noble initiative that will see future sportspersons playing against each other and sharpening their skills with interaction that will take place on the day,” she said.
