Mines in Gwanda conform to Community Share Ownership Trust

meeting convened by the Matabeleland South Governor and Resident Minister Mrs Angeline Masuku in Gwanda yesterday, representatives of the mining firms said they were ready for the launch.
Also present at the meeting were Youth Development, Indigenisation and Empowerment Minister Saviour Kasukuwere, Local Government and Urban Development Minister Ignatious Chombo and Co-Home Affairs Minister Kembo Mohadi.
Governor Masuku said that the local chiefs who are the custodians of the natural resources where the foreign-owned companies operated from.  Chiefs Masuku, Mathe and Nhlamba were also present at the stakeholders meeting to finalise preparations for the launch of the Gwanda Community Share Ownership Trust.
A total of 19 foreign-owned firms are operating in Matabeleland where they are engaged mainly in gold mining. South African-owned cement producer PPC has significant presence in the province.
Minister Kasukuwere said that a Deed of Trust for the scheme had already been drafted and would soon be registered to operationalise the trust with a seed capital of up to US$20 million.
The benefits of the trust would be enjoyed by the entire community and should not be viewed as personal possessions of the chiefs, he said.
