Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development Minister Professor Amon Murwira has applauded Midlands State University (MSU) for being the first State university to hold a stakeholder interface meeting in compliance with the dictates of the country’s public sector corporate governance guidelines.
In his address during the second edition of the MSU annual stakeholder interface meeting held at the university’s main campus in Gweru last week, Prof Murwira said the university was moving in the right direction in terms of corporate governance.
“MSU must be applauded for holding the interface meeting, which is in compliance with the dictates of the public sector corporate governance guidelines,” he said.
“The university should be commended for also highlighting its financials to members of the public for transparency purposes.”
Prof Murwira underscored the need to transform education into goods and services as part of the country’s industrialisation and modernisation efforts.
His ministry, he said, was preoccupied with re-configuring the country’s higher education system to ensure that it produced goods and services.
“Our hallmark as a ministry is a programmatic approach, our plan has been mainly to reconfigure the higher and tertiary education system so that it delivers what we want, which is goods and services,” he said.
In his remarks, MSU Council chairman Engineer Caleb Makwiranzou said as a stakeholder-driven university, feedback from stakeholders was important in informing the university’s operational and growth strategies.
“We are a strong stakeholder-driven institution and we value regular conversations with our stakeholders and therefore, we are interested in the feedback from our stakeholders,” he said.
MSU Vice-Chancellor Prof Victor Muzvidziwa said while the university had grown tremendously over the years, it remained faithful to the vision of its founders, among them President Mnangagwa.
“We have remained faithful to the vision of our founders, among them His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe and Chancellor of Midlands State University Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa, who was instrumental in the establishment of the university,” he said.
“Students are the most important resource base that will take us to the promised land.”
The stakeholder interface meeting is an annual event on the MSU calendar as it provides an opportunity for stakeholders to get important insight into developments that took place within the university during the 2017 reporting period.
The university’s financial statements were also presented during the interface meeting.
