Traffic and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona has officially commissioned the Hokonya Traffic Training Centre at Hokonya Primary School in Chivhu, Chikomba district.
The centre was established by the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) as a platform to educate pupils on what they are expected to and not to do on the roads.
Minister Mhona said the centre was established to primarily reduce road carnage.
“As you know, the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe was established for the purpose of promoting road safety in the country,” he said.
“Today, we are here to witness an innovative way of promoting road safety through a Traffic Training Centre.
“This training centre has become a central watershed for the promotion of road safety in this part of the country.”
He said it is also a train-the-trainer’s centre where teachers, students and members of the public can benefit from and subsequently use that knowledge to influence others in their spheres of influence.
“Indeed, our stated position is that road safety is everyone’s business, and the road safety message must reach every corner of Zimbabwe for us to win the war against carnage,” he said.
In his remarks during the official opening, TSCZ board chairman Mr Kura Sibanda said the centre is intended to benefit all students in Chivhu.
“While the training centre will largely benefit Hokonya Primary School students, the intention is for it to benefit other students from surrounding schools and all the children in the Chivhu community,” he said.
“The construction of this centre is indeed a significant milestone towards achieving the United Nations goal of reducing road carnage.”
