MINISTER of State for Bulawayo Metropolitan Province, Eunice Nomthandazo Moyo yesterday urged Team Zimbabwe to win many medals for the nation. Addressing journalists after the official commissioning of White City Stadium in Bulawayo yesterday, Minister Moyo wished Zimbabwe’s athletics team well at the ongoing African Union Sports Council Region 5 Under- 20 Youth Games.
“I’m hoping the rains won’t disturb the proceedings of these Games. I’m also impressed by the turnout by the people of Bulawayo to attend these Games. It’s very impressive and it shows that people are interested in what’s happening here. I hope Zimbabwe athletes will do well to win,” said Minister Moyo at the stadium that underwent massive refurbishment.
The rains did not deter the fans as they braved the weather while some who live in nearby suburbs of Iminyela and Njube rushed to collect their umbrellas.
Chronicle Sport spoke to a number of fans who were under their umbrellas and patiently waiting for action to resume.
“I can’t just go home. I’m an athlete myself and I used to run long distances during my high school days,” said Sazini Nkomo.
Another spectator Nqobani Sibanda said he didn’t mind the rains because the Games are a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
“I can’t manage to miss the action despite the rains.
“These Games are very important for Bulawayo and they’re the best thing that has ever happened for this country. It’s up to us to come out and support our team,” said Sibanda.
